Behind the high
walls
and deep ditches
and barbed wire
beats the safe heart.
Safe
completely protected
totally sheltered
absolutely
alone
isolated
insulated
Up periscope
no
fear
Down periscope.
Safe again.
Sending out
longings for
someone to
come to dinner
But when they come
they can’t get past
the walls
the wire
How hard it is
to open the door
to risk invasion
to not be safe
anymore.
to not be
alone . . .
anymore.
To let them in
is to risk . . .
life.
To not
is to . . .
die.
This one really resonates with me, Bill. Wanting to know and be known, yet struggling against the "safety" of isolation. Here's to open doors and up periscopes!
